Gollies and Clowns

My golliwogs are formed from hand-sewn or rolled leather and measure between ¾ of an inch and 1 ¼ inches in height. They have painted faces, stitched hair and leather shoes with separate uppers and soles.
Girl gollies are dressed in knitted cotton dresses and panties. Some have a raffia basket of luggage and an invitation to visit or go to the seaside but several are planning an elopement. Boy gollies may also have a small neatly-packed wardrobe of knitted clothing and a love letter, which matches them to their intended partner.

My miniature gollies quickly form their own personality as they are being created and “tell me” how they should be dressed and finished. Golliwogs are a delight to make and they are always a surprise on completion.
